The Law of the Medes and Persians
The Law of the Medes and Persians is referred to in the Old Testament book of Daniel, chapter 8. Its key characteristic was was that “ the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be repealed.” In times past, people would refer to some situation as being like the Law of the Medes & Persians, meaning it was unalterable.
There are many laws on the books that seem perplexing or even pointless, such as in Utah, where whale-hunting is illegal. Or West Virginia, where it's illegal to hunt with a ferret. But they don't seem to change the laws. Contrary to the Law of the Medes and Persians, I'm sure you've heard that the U.S. Supreme Court recently determined that The infamous Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision of 1973 was incorrect on constitutional, not moral, reasons. There is FAR too much to this to completely contend with any part of this issue in this space, but the reversed decision was based on the following facts: 1) that abortion is not mentioned in the Constitution, nor is such a right “implicitly protected by any constitutional provision, including the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment” upon which the decision was based; 2) that “Abortion is not “deeply rooted in this Nation’s history and tradition,” a basis for any decision about anything not expressly in the Constitution; 3) That States have “legitimate interests” in regulating abortion. In other words, the Constitution says this is up to the States to decide individually. ; 4) That Abortion is “fundamentally different” from the subjects of similar court decisions because it involves the taking of a life; 5) That the “right” to abortion was “entirely unknown in American law” until the latter part of the 20th century. “Indeed, when the Fourteenth Amendment was adopted, three quarters of the States made abortion a crime at all stages of pregnancy.”; 6) “It is time to heed the Constitution and return the issue of abortion to the people’s elected representatives,” the decision says. In other words, Roe v Wade was a case of politically-motivated legislating from the Bench, a fact conceded even by pro abortion legal scholars. There is more, but I figure I'm likely to exceed my time here.
People who don't understand the decision are engaging in anti-Christian rage, hate-mongering, as well as bullying and violent, real insurrection against duly-installed government. A fact that suddenly does not bother our present administration. This despite the fact that many states will see no change whatsoever in abortion availability or numbers. Do they only fear the end of free “care” to deal with a “problem”?
The U.S. Has seen more than 63,000,000 aborted “problems” since 1973. About the same as the current populations of all the 10 states of the Northeast from Maine to New York and south to Pennsylvania and Maryland. It is the #1 cause of death, actually. About 17 in the time it takes you to read this article. The problem is, well, they were really people. And they'd have looked like people in a few, undisturbed months.
Here is half of an illustration I've seen--- “Would you recommend abortion in the following circumstances:
1. The father is sick with sniffles, the mother has TB. They had 4 children. One is blind, one is deaf and another has TB. One died young. The mother is pregnant again. Given the quality of life, expense and inconvenience of handicaps, would you consider recommending abortion?
2. A teenage girl is pregnant. She is not married. Her fiancée is not the father of the baby, and he is very upset. Would you recommend an abortion?
If you answered “yes” to these situations: In the first case, you'd have recommended the death of Beethoven before he wrote any music.
And in the 2nd case, you'd have called for the death of Jesus, the Christ even before His ministry or work for your forgiveness and new life!
Naturally, pro-abortion folks sneer at this example, because of its inconvenience to the pro-abortion pre-conception (if you'll pardon the pun) that a pre-born baby is not a human with gifts, talents or personality until that magical moment that she is born. As the uncle of a beautiful woman who was born very premature (an abortable age, actually) I find this offensively preposterous.
God says very different things. Of the unborn, he says “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you” (Jeremiah 1:5) “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb” (Psalm 139) These tell us that we are made by God for His purposes and are identified as such from our formation in the womb. As for those who were a part of a deliberately aborted pregnancy, God tells us that “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1). Peace and forgiveness & new life await for those who turn to Jesus. And that is more powerful & long-lasting than the Law of the Medes and Persians! Pastor Geoff
